Sunsets in Zadar

Sunsets in Zadar

If you’ve heard about Zadar, Croatia, you’ve also probably heard Alfred Hitchcock’s proclamation regarding its sunset:

“Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West, in Florida, applauded at every evening.”

We haven’t had the privilege of watching a sunset in Key West yet as comparison, but for our first sunset in Zadar, I actually stopped in my tracks and turned to Aaron with a “Whoa, is this real?” look. All I could think of was, “Man, was he right.” The sunsets in Zadar are spectacular.

And then we did what Mr. Hitchcock proceeded to do, as we snapped away trying in vain to capture the essence and true extent of this sunset’s beauty. After we decided to cool off from all the clicking, we sat at the water’s edge and enjoyed the amazing display of colors.

Here you can judge for yourself if Zadar really does have some of the most breathtaking sunsets (and just keep in mind these are pictures taken with either an iPhone or a Nikon D5000, our 6 year old camera and basic lens which Aaron is frequently reminding me is in dire need of an upgrade 🙂 ).

We were lucky enough to enjoy two more sunsets in Zadar. Though the others never quite matched the beauty or feeling of awe we felt on the first day, they were still striking. On weekends, there’s more of a crowd gathered to watch the show, complete with applause as the sun takes its final bow.

Greeting to the Sun

After the sun set, we tried to play dance dance revolution on the Nikola Bašić’s interactive display, the Greeting to the Sun, strolled the promenade next to the Sea Organ, and enjoyed some of Dalmatia’s specialties along the lively Kovačka ulica.

Zadar is Centrally Located

We stayed in Zadar as the airport is close to the city and it’s serviced with Ryanair flights from Stansted. Zadar is a convenient midpoint between Krka National Park, Plitvice Lakes National Park, and is in the middle of the Dalmatian Coast, with gorgeous beaches and fun islands to explore.

It’s approximately 1 hour drive time to the Skradin entrance of Krka National Park and 1.5 hours to Plitvice Lakes National Park if you use the toll road for both. The toll for each way is about €3. Zadar is close enough to arrive at the opening time for both of these parks without having to wake up obscenely early, which we definitely recommend. The parks got crowded around 10am when we went in May, and from talking to the park employees, it only gets busier throughout the summer.

We stayed about an 8 minute drive or 40 minute walk out of the old town of Zadar, so it was nice that there was convenient and reasonable hourly parking along Liburnska obala, the inner border of the peninsula. It is high season rates throughout the summer, so 6 kuna per hour, or about €1 between 08:00 – 22:00. From these parking lots, all of old town Zadar is easily accessible on foot.
