Fountain spotting in Aix-en-Provence

Fountain spotting in Aix-en-Provence

Once I learned Aix-en-Provence, France was nicknamed the city of a thousand fountains, I started keeping an eye out and it seemed like fountains were popping up everywhere we walked! Though there aren’t quite a thousand fountains in Aix-en-Provence, there are quite a few, so it wasn’t hard to catch them as we explored Aix. Some are obvious and grand, while others are just random (La Fontaine du Sanglier of a wild boar) or trying to blend in by going au naturel (Fontaine Mossue on Cours Mirabeau covered in moss). See how many fountains you can spot when you’re visiting Aix-en-Provence!

Starting out on Cours Mirabeau, the town’s main avenue, there are four fountains. First, Fontaine de la Rotonde, the grandest of them all, looking extra festive as we were in town for Aix’s annual carnival in April. Walking down the street, we saw Fontaine des Neuf Canons, originally a trough for migrating flocks of sheep, and then Fontaine Mossue, a natural hot water fountain covered in moss. Capping off the promenade is a 19th century fountain on Good King René, blessing his people with culture, art and wine.

What time of year did you travel to Aix de Provence? Do you recommend any nice B&B's?

Hi! We were in Aix at the end of April and the weather was beautiful! We stayed in a small Airbnb. It wasn't anything fancy, but it looked recently remodeled, was really clean, and centrally located. If you're looking for something with more amenities, I still really recommend the area (shown in the Airbnb map if you click on the link) as we could easily explore the town by foot. Hope you have a great trip!
