If I had my way, every hike would have a waterfall. Western North Carolina is flowing with waterfalls, and a lot of them don’t even require much of a hike. Here are 7 waterfalls to visit south of Asheville, NC.

Merino wool has long been our go-to for the best winter and travel layers as it’s super soft, helps regulate body temperature, wicks moisture, and dries pretty fast. ⛰️ Tips for planning a trip to St. Lucia 🏝️

St Lucia is a popular honeymoon spot in the Caribbean with some amazing (and pricey) resorts, but we found that it can be family friendly and there is a ton to do outside of lounging by the hotel pool. Here’s an overview for planning a trip to St Lucia.

🕰️ Length of trip: 1 week is enough time to explore the island and have plenty of time to relax. We went for 10 days and didn’t need that much time to do everything we wanted, but I definitely didn’t mind the extra time.

🏡 Where to Stay: Soufriere area. We spent three days on the north part of the island (near Rodney Bay), and while it’s pretty up there, most of the really amazing and unique things about St Lucia are close to Soufriere. Traffic in between the two can be a beast (especially around Castries), so I wouldn’t plan on traveling back and forth that much between the two areas. We rented an Airbnb for a week in Soufriere and loved it. It was a 2 bed/2bath home with a full kitchen that was located right in town and really affordable. If I wasn’t sticking to a budget, I’d stay right on the beach at Sugar Beach or Anse Chastanet.

☀️ When to visit: We visited at the end of the wet season in mid November and the weather was great. We did have one large storm, but it was overnight. Dry season runs December to May. The upside of visiting in shoulder season was that it wasn’t super busy. The downside was that a lot of the little restaurants weren’t open yet, so it was hard to find places that stayed open for dinner.

🚗 Renting a car: We rented a car (we usually do), since it gives us so much more flexibility. Driving around the island was pretty easy, though the streets around Soufriere are narrow. You could book tours with transport included if you preferred.

🐠 Activities: Snorkeling, scuba diving, amazing beaches, hot springs, waterfalls, mineral/mud bath, hiking, sailing, tour a cocoa plantation

St Lucia was a stunner, both above the water and below. 💦 We snorkeled almost every day and I went scuba diving in Soufriere Bay. I saw octopus, lobster, eel, and of course tons of fish and some of the most beautiful coral.

We also saw several lion fish which look really cool, but they’re an invasive species that are rapidly spreading in the Caribbean and out-competing most of the native fish. The dive master speared them and left them for the eels.

Since we’ve moved to the East Coast, we’ve been visiting more of the Caribbean since it’s (slightly) more accessible…though we did have to route through NYC on the way here, so that obviously didn’t help with total travel time.

St Lucia was never high on my bucket list, and now that we’ve visited, I have no idea why! I knew it was a really popular spot for honeymoons, but there is so much to do outside of the really nice resorts. Overall, we found St. Lucia pretty affordable by staying in Airbnbs and renting our own car. It has amazing beaches, some of the best snorkeling/scuba diving, fun hot springs, incredible views, and beautiful hiking.

We love getting to the beach early in the morning. The weather is beautiful, the beach is empty, and that’s usually when the waves are best. We may have caught the last of the summer beach days the other weekend, where it was cool enough for a sweater in the morning, but warmed up by midday.
